Himalayan Shepherds and Mountains

About Sarvoday Himalayan Foundation

Empowering the nomadic shepherds of the Himalayas

We are a grassroots organisation walking alongside ghumantu bhedpalak families of Bharmour, Churah and Pangi – strengthening livelihoods, safety and culture through technology, education and community-led initiatives.

Who We Are

Walking with Himalayan ghumantu shepherds

Sarvoday Himalayan Foundation is a grassroots organisation working closely with nomadic bhedpalak (shepherd) communities of Bharmour, Churah and Pangi. We journey with families who migrate across high-altitude meadows, often far from roads, networks and basic services.

Our work combines modern technology, safety systems and community-led development so that shepherds can move with dignity, secure livelihoods and preserve their rich Himalayan culture.

Why Our Work Matters

Protecting lives, livelihoods & Himalayan knowledge

Life on the move means constant exposure to climate risk, wild animals, uncertain income and disrupted education for children. We work with shepherds, not for them, to design tools and systems that respond to these realities.

Uplifting nomadic lives

From GPS-supported safety to access to government schemes, we help shepherd families navigate a changing world while keeping their movement-based way of life at the centre.

Tackling key challenges on the ground

  • Unpredictable weather and climate-linked disasters
  • Remote routes with weak connectivity and services
  • Financial insecurity and losses from livestock deaths
  • Risks from wildlife for both shepherds and animals
  • Interrupted schooling and limited opportunities for children
Our Vision

A dignified, sustainable future for Himalayan shepherd communities

We imagine a Himalaya where nomadic shepherd families can continue their movement-based way of life with safety, secure incomes and strong cultural roots. A future in which young people do not have to choose between education and tradition, and where pastoral wisdom guides climate-resilient landscapes.

Every programme we run – from GPS-supported safety to wool value chains – is a step towards this shared vision with shepherd communities of Bharmour, Churah and Pangi.

Sarvoday Himalayan FoundationOur journey with shepherd families

Our story: walking alongside the shepherds of Himachal.

For generations, ghumantu bhedpalak families have moved with their flocks across the high meadows of Bharmour, Churah and Pangi, carrying songs, stories and knowledge of every ridge and river. Today, climate shocks, shrinking grazing spaces and lack of basic services make this way of life increasingly fragile.

Sarvoday Himalayan Foundation began as a small effort to respond to distress calls from the mountains. Over time, it has grown into a community-led initiative focused on safety, secure livelihoods, education and dignity for shepherd families – without asking them to abandon their migration routes.

  • Listening first – co-creating solutions with shepherds.
  • Pairing traditional wisdom with GPS, safety tech and data.
  • Keeping children, women and elders at the centre of our work.

Early journeys began with simple check-ins on migrating families – today they form a network of trust, safety and shared action across the high pastures.
